Dog Breeds – The Greyhound

If you have had some thoughts lately about bringing a Greyhound into your family, then this article might help you to understand the breed more and decide if they would be the ideal pet for you. As with all breeds of dogs, the question often asked is “Do Greyhounds make good house pets?” Hopefully you can find the answer to this question and many more in our in depth look at this gracious animal.

Greyhounds have many qualities as a pet, they are very easygoing, intelligent, sensitive to other dogs and to humans, very loyal to their owners, brave and an incredible lust and devotion to life in general. This breed of dog learns from the beginning the rights and wrongs and has a lot of respect for its owner and other members of the household – often being very loving towards children and not over-forceful with them.

Physically, greyhounds are built to run like the wind and are very alert to their surroundings – which is why so many are used in dog races. Their qualities don’t end there either – they are great protectors of their home and are not all bad at hunting either. From reading the aforementioned, you can already see that in answer to the previous question – yes, they do make great house pets!

The one thing that is often seen as the worst element to their personalities is their timidness, especially with strangers but also with their owners. They are very sensitive creatures and don’t accept punishment very well – they might choose to ignore their owners if they sense that they are unhappy with them. On a good note though, they are very beautiful dogs – tall and with a slim build, they look very gracious.

We have to give the Greyhound credit for its impressive capabilities on the field – this superb breed can reach speeds up to forty-five miles an hour! They are fascinating to watch and their differing color combinations can add to their appeal. The coat is made up of short hairs that can range and combine such colors as black, white, blue, gray, fawn, brindle and fallow. Short haired dogs such as our Greyhound, don’t need high maintenance grooming – combing the coat twice a week is thought to be more than acceptable.

Another advantage to these dogs, is that they don’t have a heavy shedding of hairs and so people with allergies can get along well being in their company. Where they lack the need for regular grooming, they do need a lot of exercise and will be happiest when they get out for long walks or runs during the day.

Greyhounds are most content when they have access to both indoor and outdoor areas where they can play in a garden. When feeding them, you should try to split meal times over the course of the day – two or three times would be much better for them than just on the one occasion. If they have only one meal a day, they could be so excited on receiving it that they wolf it down and consequently suffer with bloating. When giving any treatments to your pet Greyhound, seek advice from the veterinary clinic first – as they can be sensitive to certain treatments. A happy and healthy Greyhound can live on average up to 12 years and give up their days of racing around 4 years of age. On that note, an ex-racing dog can be a perfect choice of pet as they are extremely well mannered and trained.

Choosing The Right Dog Breed For You

There are possibly many thousands of dog breeds be that purebred or mixed bred. These dogs vary in size, shape, personality, and abilities. For the American Kennel Club, they only recognize 143 dog breeds. Since there are too many dog breeds to choose from, you might want to start a little research before making a choice of which dog breed is ideal for you. For sure there are many books in the library which has pictures and information about different dog breeds. With the information you will gather, you could narrow down your choices to a few breed. There are some questions you need to answer for yourself when choosing a dog breed.

Knowing the dog breed will help you determine the temperament of the dog. If it is a mixed bred dog, it may have a difference with the temperament of a pure bred one. This issue you have to know in choosing a dog breed especially when you have kids at home. You may consider a dog breed that is smaller and gentler if you have children at home. Your budget to buy the dog will also narrow down your choices by cost or price. A certain dog breed may be more costly in terms of maintenance such as food, medical care, and vaccinations than another breed.

If you can allocate a bigger budget for your dog, then perhaps you can afford to have a high-maintenance dog breed. You cannot just buy a dog out of whim without taking into consideration your financial resources because having a dog can be costly. If you are renting, you have to ensure the approval of your landlord. Bear in mind that with a dog in your house, you might be scorned by your dear neighbors in the building. Furthermore, the availability of space in your place is equally important as there are dog breeds that require a lot of exercise.

Many dogs may not be able to do well when given a limited space for them to loiter around. Some dog breed may be small, but don’t be fooled. Jack Russell Terriers require a lot of exercise while there are bigger dogs that laze around all day long. If you have limited time to walk your dog, you can choose a dog breed that is smaller and less active. However, do your research of dog breeds carefully because the dog’s size does not say it all. Aside from the space requirement, you have to consider the grooming requirements of your chosen dog breed.

Some dogs are very hairy while there are breeds that are not. You must brace yourself of the amount of dog hair to be shed in your house in this case. Know which dog breed shed a little hair and require less grooming if you have little extra time. As mentioned earlier, grooming your dogs will also require money. So, ask yourself if you have a budget for your dog’s regular grooming. Regardless of what dog breed you will get, all dogs need to be trained in order to adapt to your lifestyle and not to disrupt with it. In this case, you really need to spend time and effort in training your dog if you want it to blend in your home.

Dog Breed Traits

In this article we are going to give you examples of the different dog breeds and how they may fit into your life. Some of the things that we will be covering is how dogs are not created equal, what are some of the common traits of specific dogs, and then finally why you should base your decision solely on the fact that you have done your home work, looked at the dog or “pet” of your choice and, that you and your family agree that your new addition will be perfect for your house hold.

This is a permanent decision, you would not just give your child back or away would you?

All dogs are not created equal and all dogs do not follow suit with the other members of their breed, it is best that we start with that statement. We all know that the Golden retriever has a tendency to snap and the poodle is very affectionate which goes against all that you know about each of these two breeds.

While there is always exceptions to the rules, there are enough of the dogs out there that do not follow suit with the others of their breeds, which is why we do investigations like this before we add the breed to our loving family. Remember that dog breed traits are guidelines so you can make an educated decision on a breed, it may not describe the certain animal you are getting ready to purchase. Always feel comfortable with the dog you are going to purchase on a one on one standard not off of what the breed standards are.

For instance some dogs are known to be hyperactive, rambunctious creatures that have ability to be very destructive, and incorrigible if they are not trained and monitored at all times. These breeds are the Jack Russel Terriers the Labrador Retrievers, and the Collie. Jack Russell Terriers also dig when they are bored, while the lab will show he/she is unhappy by urinating on your floor in your home, proven they are not fully house broken. Though this may be true I am sure yours will be a perfect angel though.

Some breeds are awful barkers, or even worse they are howlers. These dog breeds include the Boarder Collie who has a lung piercing bark. You also have the infamous Beagle that howls, and lets not forget the yappy Poodle. If you have a timid dog it will overreact to every sound or movement and will bark as well, usually in the smaller breeds. These dogs will include the Chihuahua, the Pomeranian, and the Lhasa Apso. The Chihuahua tend to be very hard to house break and also seems to be noted as a biter or more commonly and “ankle biter.” Hounds in the city tend to be miserable and freak out on all the neighbors.

Finally you have the breeds that nobody could say a bad word about, this would include the Golden Retriever. These dogs are quite, good natured, and gentle but there is bound to be a biter in that mix some where. Then we have the other way the breed no one can say any thing good for, the Pit bulls and their cousins that only get the bad press because it sells. If you like the breed and you are willing to gently train them and teach them that you love them like one of your kids, you may have the best pet on the block.

Four Large Non-Shedding Dog Breeds

If you’re planning on adding a large dog to your family but are worried about the potential for shedding, you’ll be happy to know there are several large dog breeds that have the potential to shed very little. It’s unrealistic to expect that you’ll find a dog breed that won’t release a single hair onto your couch, but these large dog breeds come pretty close to being non shedders:

Non shedding large dog breeds: Greyhound

The Greyhound is a dog that sheds very little. You should be able to keep your furniture almost completely free of hair by lightly brushing your greyhounds coat every few days. In addition, the Greyhound tends to be a clean breed that requires infrequent bathing and grooming. Combine this with a sweet and gentle disposition and you have the formula for a great indoor pet. Contrary to popular belief, Greyhounds don’t have high exercise requirements and can be content even in an apartment setting.

Non shedding large dog breeds: Standard Poodle

If you’re looking for a dog that comes close to being a non shedder, the Standard Poodle may be your answer. Many dog loving allergy sufferers have made the poodle their dog of choice due to the non allergic, nonirritating nature of their coat. Unfortunately, the Standard Poodle still requires grooming including weekly brushings and regular bathing and clipping. Some Poodle owners leave this task to the professional while others buy the supplies to do it themselves at home. In return, you get a dog that’s extremely intelligent and easy to train. Many Standard Poodle owners are quite enthusiastic about the breed and claim they wouldn’t have any other breed.

Non shedding large dog breeds: Airdale Terrier

The Airdale terrier is another large dog breed that sheds very little, although they do require a thorough brushing at least once a week. Most Airdales are clipped every two months or so to keep their non shedding fur manageable. This can be rather expensive and is best done by a competent grooming shop that has knowledge of the peculiarities of Airdale fur. Surprisingly enough, the Airdale isn’t necessarily a good dog for allergy sufferers since some people are quite sensitive to their dander. The Airdale tends to be an intelligent but high energy pet. Be prepared to give them lots of exercise.

Non shedding large dog breeds: Irish Water Spaniel

The Irish Spaniel has a very distinctive coat with dense curls that shed very little. Although shedding is not generally a problem with this breed, they do require regular grooming to keep their coat from becoming matted and unsightly. Brushing two to three times per week is recommended as well as regular clippings. The coat of this dog breed is ideal for those who suffer from allergies since they shed little dander. This majestic looking breed has a history of being an active hunting dog and will require regular exercise to diffuse their considerable energy. They tend to be easy to train and are extremely loyal to their owners.

Other larger dog breeds that tend to shed very little include the Spanish Waterdog, the Giant Schnauzer, the Basenji, and the Wirehaired Fox Terrier.

So, if you want a large dog but are worried about the hair, consider one of these non shedding dog breeds that have the reputation of being excellent pets.

Four Giant, Gentle Dog Breeds

There’s nothing more comforting to have bouncing around the house than a big dog. You won’t have to worry about stepping on them as you do with little, lap dogs. Some people lament having a large dog because they want a dog that’s gentle and who can rest in their lap when they watch television. The good news is you can actually have it both ways. Here are the best gentle giant dog breeds that love to be cuddled:

Gentle Giant Dog – Bernese Mountain Dog

Although the Bernese Mountain Dog usually weighs eighty pounds are more, this is still one of the most gentle and affectionate breeds around. The Bernese Mountain dog has a history of serving as a guardian of the flock, although their aptitude as a property guard dog was limited due to its gentle, trusting nature. Although energetic, this dog breed is content to be cuddled and would crawl into your lap if you would allow it. This breed makes an ideal family dog.

Gentle Giant Dog – Newfoundland

Don’t be fooled by the size of this massive dog that in some ways resembles a bear. This dog loves both people and animals and is a natural with children. Even though a Newfoundland may want to crawl into your lap, you may not be able to handle all 150 pounds of him. Unfortunately, this dog breed doesn’t have a long life span. Being prone to hip dysplasia and various forms of heart disease, their life span is under ten years on average. Be prepared for your Newfoundland to attract a lot of attention from strangers and he’ll love every minute of it.

Gentle Giant Dog – Great Dane

This tall, regal appearing dog might intimidate you with its height, but its gentle manner will win you over. Historically, this sturdily built dog was used for hunting but is now more comfortable serving as a loving pet. Affection and easy to train, this dog is a natural family companion. Although excellent with children, their size can be a bit intimidating even to larger children which make training important to reduce the incidence of jumping and overly exuberant play. Unfortunately, this breed is prone to a variety of health problems including gastric torsion or volvulus with an average life expectancy of less than eight years.

Gentle Giant Dog – Irish Wolfhound

This dog breed has the distinction of being the tallest and largest member of the hound group. This breed has served historically as both a war dog and hunting dog. If given proper socialization, they are both gentle and loving by nature, even with children. Of course, this breed’s large size can make them intimidating to a small child. Plus, this enthusiastic dog can forget his own size when he plays. Thus, it’s important that small children be supervised around an Irish Wolfhound. All in all, this breed can be a loving and devoted pet and family member.

Gentle giant dog breeds can be a joy to have around the house and they adapt extremely well to indoor life. Be careful though that that 150 pound dog may be heading straight towards your lap!

German Shepherd Dog

This isn’t surprised considering this dog breed was originally bred to fight lions in Roman amphitheaters. They do have a tendency to be stubborn and obstinate which can cause them to take on aggressive characteristics unless properly trained and socialized. With proper training and socialization, this breed can be both a loving family member as well as an excellent guard dog.

Chow Chow

The Chow Chow is a regal looking dog with an appearance somewhat similar to a small lion. This is one of the few breeds with the distinction of having a blue tongue. The Chow Chow personality tends to be one of aloofness and independence with a strong stubborn streak which can make training a challenge. They also tend to be territorial and suspicious of strangers which makes them a natural guard dog breed. Although they enjoy the company of their family, they’re not known for being as overtly affectionate as other dogs. Because of the strong willed nature of this dog, they need an owner with an equally strong will and the willingness to spend the time needed for training and socialization.

Doberman Pinscher

This slim, but powerful breed of dog has a graceful, muscular appearance and a fearless, loyal temperament. In fact, many dog owners claim the Doberman Pinschers’ loyalty exceeds that of most other dog breeds. They tend to bond strongly with their family and can be trusted even around children once they’re socialized and trained. Possessing great courage and intelligence, the Doberman Pinscher is an excellent guard dog breed as well as a satisfying family pet.

Although there are many excellent dogs who can serve as protector, these four guard dog breeds have proven their ability to protect and defend their family and have strong reputations for being fearless and courageous. Choosing a Dog Breed: More Small Dogs and Mixed-Breeds

I love old movies with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. In ‘Shall We Dance’, Fred and Ginger are sailing across the Atlantic on the Queen Anne. Ginger stops at the ship’s busy kennel and takes out her dog. While Fred, Ginger and her dog walk back and forth on the deck, the little dog steps on its sleeve and ruins its sweater. How adorable! Standing by the rail, Ginger holds her fluffy-faced dog while Fred sings “I’ve Got Beginner’s Luck.” Can you guess the breed of dog? My personal opinion is this cute dog is a Maltipoo rather than a Havanese or Bichon Frise. Agree? There are many wonderful small dog breeds. Some of the best small dogs are not purebreds, but mixed-breeds technically called crossbreeds. Before you buy or adopt a small dog, it is a good idea to research the different breeds so you will know which dog is right for you.

Mixed-breeds (Crossbreeds)

Maltipoo- The Malti-Poo is a crossbreed because it is a cross between 2 different purebred dog breeds: the Maltese and the Poodle. This adorable small dog often has a turned back, fluffy tail. The characteristics in mixed-breeds are less predictable than in purebreds. Make sure that you consult a reputable breeder or the shelter about the qualities you are looking for in your dog before you buy a mixed dog. The Maltipoo is an active and affectionate pet. They do well with other pets, but not with small children. They require regular grooming. Maltipoo’s are good apartment dogs as long as they get enough exercise.

Morkie- Also called the Yorktese, this dog is a cross between a Maltese and a Yorkshire Terrier. The Morkie is very small, loving and loyal. With training they can get along with other pets and older children. They need regular grooming. The Yorktese can be an apartment dog as long as it gets regular exercise. They make better watchdogs than Maltipoo’s.

Puggle- The Puggle is a little bit bigger than the Maltipoo and often possesses the wonderful characteristics of beagles and pugs. Puggle’s are good around children and other pets. They like human interaction and lots of exercise. These dogs require regular grooming and are alert watchdogs.

Cockapoo- These dogs have adorable faces framed by curly and fluffy ears. They are half cocker spaniel and half poodle. Poodle crossbreeds are often popular because poodles do not shed making them good for people with allergies. The Cockapoo needs regular grooming, but is a particularly very low shedding dog. Very playful and affectionate, this dog is a popular pet. They are good with children and other pets. Like poodles and cocker spaniels, the Cockapoo is very intelligent. They like lots of exercise. An apartment can be OK as long as the Cockapoo is walked often.

Shih-Poo- The little Shihpoo has the cute eyes and face of the Shih Tzu with a little curly hair from the poodle. They are better around older children and can get along with other pets with training. Loyal and loving, they make good little watchdogs. The Shih-Poo requires regular grooming. This dog likes attention and does very well in an apartment.

Goldendoodle- These dogs are a cross between golden retrievers and poodles. They can be small-medium to large in size. Consult a quality breeder about their sizes. They are typically a gorgeous cream or golden color though can be found with red coats. Goldendoodles are very intelligent and versatile dogs just like poodles and golden retrievers. They do well both indoors and outdoors. They require some grooming and exercise, but far less than golden retrievers. Usually, they are low shedding. Goldendoodles are good around children and other pets.

Westiepoo- These gorgeous dogs are a cross between a West Highland White Terrier and a poodle. They are similar in appearance to the Maltipoo except they are larger, being almost a medium sized dog. Also Westiepoo 50/50 crosses will have coats that are only white. They do well with older children and other pets with training. Regular grooming is recommended. Very low shedding, they are good for allergy sufferers. They also like plenty of attention, meaning they don’t like to be left alone. The Westiepoo can live in an apartment with regular exercise.

Maltipom- These very small dogs can resemble fluffy, white stuffed animals. A cross between a Maltese and a Pomeranian, they can also be found with other colors. These dogs are spirited and loyal, making good, small watchdogs. The Maltipom does well with older children and can get along with other pets with training. They like attention and do very well in apartments. They need regular grooming.

Pure Breeds

Havanese- Another adorable little dog with a high, fluffy tail is the Havanese. They often have longer coats giving them a sheepish look. The National Dog of Cuba, this breed is becoming more popular in the US and around the globe. They are excellent family pets because they are good with children and other pets. They require regular grooming, but are low shedding so they are good for those with allergies. The Havanese can be an apartment dog as long as it gets periodic exercise.

Lhasa Apso- These distinctive dogs are often seen with a long coat that hangs to the ground on all sides. This breed comes from Tibet where they guarded Buddhist monasteries. They are playful and loving dogs, but they are wary of strangers making good watchdogs. They are not good around small children, and generally, not around other pets. The Lhasa Apso requires regular grooming. This breed prefers to be an indoor breed and can be apartment dogs.

Bichon Frise- These dogs are beautiful and small with a face that is often framed by fluffy, white hair. This breed was often a favorite of French and European royalty. They are playful and cheerful dogs that make wonderful family pets. This breed does well with children and other pets. They can be apartment dogs if they get enough exercise. Their only drawback is they require daily grooming.

Fox Terrier- The Toy Fox Terrier is the smallest variety of this breed while the Smooth Fox Terrier is bigger but could still be called a small dog. They are mostly white with dark makings on the head and have distinctive high, pointy ears. They are loyal dogs, but don’t do well around small children. The Toy variety is better with other pets, though only with training. These dogs only need minimal grooming. If they get regular exercise, they can be an apartment dog.

Papillon- These distinctive little dogs have a white blaze through the middle of their forehead and large, winged ears. This gorgeous breed is energetic, yet affectionate. They are better with older children. The Papillon can be an apartment dog, but likes outdoor exercise. They require regular grooming.

Miniature Bull Terrier- This dog has the big, long face of Spuds MacKenzie, but is the smaller version. These dogs are energetic and protective. They are not good around small children and at least a small yard is recommended. Grooming requirements are very minimal, but daily exercise is advisable.

Sealyham Terrier- These handsome dogs have a solid coat and a distinctive beard. Usually white in color, they are a spirited breed, but are calm for a terrier. They do well with older children and are good watchdogs. This breed requires regular grooming. They can be apartment dogs with regular exercise.

Are you considering adding a new dog to your family? If you have children or friends and relatives who visit your home frequently, you may be concerned about your dog becoming overly rough or aggressive with them. While any dog if not trained properly has the potential to be unfriendly, there are certain dog breeds that innately tend to have gentle and friendly dispositions. If you want a friendly dog, here are five gentle dog breeds you may want to consider adding to your family:

The Golden Retriever

The Golden Retriever is a dog breed known for being very gregarious and good natured. If you’re choosing a breed based on friendliness, a Golden Retriever should be one of your top choices. One drawback is they tend to be very exuberant with high energy levels, requiring that you exercise them frequently and keep them occupied and stimulated. Otherwise, they can become destructive when bored.

Labrador Retriever

The Labrador Retriever is another very friendly and gentle dog breed who makes a good family dog if given sufficient exercise and socialization. Like the Golden Retriever, if they aren’t given sufficient exercise, they can become destructive around the house. They tend to be good natured and tolerant towards children and other animals. An ideal pet if you’re looking for a gentle dog breed.

Bichon Frise

This small, gentle dog breed tends to have an agreeable and friendly disposition with both humans and other animals. They’re an ideal dog for children due to their size and good natured personality. The generally average around fifteen pounds in weight which makes them easy to take on vacations and other outings. One drawback is that they do require frequent grooming.

Bearded Collie

This sociable and gentle dog breed makes an excellent family pet. His good nature and friendly personality make him a natural with children, if given proper socialization and training. This dog was previously bred to be a working dog so he does require daily exercise and a place to run.

Old English Sheepdog

This gentle dog breed is very lively, playful and friendly with all types of people, including children. They are also quite tolerant of other animals. They do enjoy lively play and activity so they’re best in a home where they’ll be given lots of exercise, attention, and stimulation. One disadvantage is the considerable amount of grooming they require for their long, thick hair.

If you’re looking for a friendly and gentle dog breed, these canine candidates should certainly be considered. With good training and socialization, they can make excellent family pets.
