Love Dogs And Cats, But Don?t Believe in Keeping Pets

I remember we had a family cat when I was about 10 years old. It sadly later passed away. I also remember that there was an Alsatian dog (German Shepherd) in the compound where we lived but I don’t think it belonged to us. One day it just ran away and never returned. I expect it must have found other escaped dogs and formed a pack with them, preferring their company rather than that of humans. Apart from these memories I don’t think there was any other point in my childhood where we had pets or lived near one. So I’m not entirely sure why I have this love for dogs and cats.

As an adult I’ve never owned any dogs or cats, but I’ve always felt strongly drawn to them. For instance I would most probably go and see a film because there was a dog or cat in it.Also, I’m a big fan of TV programmes such as ‘It’s me or the dog’ and ‘Dog Whisperer’.I would watch episodes at every opportunity I got. However, I don’t really agree with the idea of keeping pets even though I adore them. Therein lies my dilemma. That all sounds like a total contradiction I hear you say? Yes, I know. I can’t explain it either. Here are some of my favourite dog and cat breeds listed in order of preference.

Favourite Dog Breeds

Whippet : This is a breed I feel would suit my quiet, calm and laid back nature. They are described as gentle, patient, tolerant, quiet and make ideal companions. They are also said to have minimal shedding and require grooming only once a week.

Labradoodle : This is a cross between Labradors and Poodles. I’m drawn to this breed because of their cuteness. They are also meant to be sociable, friendly, non-aggressive, clever and very intuitive.

English bulldog : I was never keen on this breed because of their ferocious appearance, but they have won me over after observing them in parks interacting with their owners. They come across as very friendly and peaceful. However, I still don’t like the ones with the under bite. I much prefer the normal looking ones.

Labrador Retriever : My heart melts every time I see a Labrador. From what I have gleaned around me they seem to be a very popular breed. They are supposed to make good family pets because they are good-natured, friendly and very loving.

Border Collie : I became fond of this breed after seeing them on several shows on TV. They appeared to be very intelligent and eager to please. However, being so intelligent and lively means that they require plenty of attention and exercise.I may not be able to give them the time they need hence they have featured last on my list of favourite dogs.

Favourite Cat Breeds

British shorthair : Now this sounds like my kind of cat. Described as big softies, they are gentle, loving, quiet and do not crave human attention continuously. They are hardly ever mischievous and are happy as indoor cats.

Russian Blue : I think this breed would suit me because of their quiet, sensitive and reserved nature. They are also said to become devoted pets as they get used to their owners. Spending some time to groom them can speed up this process by brushing them from time to time.

Norwegian Forest Cat : I’m quite keen on this breed because they have been portrayed as intelligent, very friendly and playful. One drawback is that they may not be as independent as I would expect cats to be. Apparently, they don’t like to be left alone and always want affection.

Whether I believe in them or not, the fact is that humans have kept pets for centuries and will continue to do so. The most important thing is that the animals are kept happy and are well looked after. They bring immense joy to people’s lives and this should be reciprocated by all means.

Savannah Cat Breed

The wild-cat look-alike Savannah cat breed is a hybrid domestic breed that is a cross between the Serval and a domestic cat. A Serval is a medium-sized wild African cat. The Savannah breed originated in 1986 and became more established in later years. They were recognized by the International Cat Association in 2001.

These cats have a slightly larger, more muscular body than most domestic cats. They are tall and slim with male cats typically being larger than females. The coat of a Savannah cat is typically a light color with darker, wildcat-looking spots. Their coat is short and coarse and lies flat against the body.

Cat Breed: The Hairless Sphynx Cat

The first Sphynx cat was born in Cabbagetown, in Toronto Canada in 1966. He was a genetic fluke, certainly nothing that was expected, but thanks to this one little kitten and many dedicated breeders, we now have this unique and oddly attractive cat breed.

The Sphynx is not a commonly seen cat. Not only are they rather expensive to purchase but their unusual looks do not appeal to everyone. They are a wonderfully tempered cat. Affectionate and loving, they can happily live in a household with both children and other pets. They are an intelligent breed, inquisitive, playful, and at times mischievous. They can be rather demanding and when they want something, they can be quite noisy. They do not like to be ignored nor left alone for long periods of time. Not a good pet for those who are busy all the time. The Sphynx cat needs human companionship and will be unhappy without it.

The Sphynx is also known as the Canadian Hairless cat; despite their name, they are not entirely hairless. They are covered in a fine hair that is so thin their skin can be seen through it. Their skin appears the color their fur would have been if they had grown any. They are available in any normal cat coat colour or pattern.

They are unsuitable for an outdoor cat as they sun burn and get cold easily. Owners will often find them curled up in warm clothes, blankets or even beside other pets. These cats are usually no better for allergy sufferers than a normal cat. Allergies are not caused by the hair but from the saliva and body oils, which this cat certainly still has. Surprisingly the Sphynx also takes far more coat care than a normal cat. They need weekly baths to keep their skin oil and dirt free and their ears should be cleaned regularly.

The Canadian Hairless is a hardy cat, not given to many health problems, he is shorter lived than many of the other breeds, averaging only 12-15 years. An experienced person should never bring kittens home before 12 weeks of age, as they often suffer from respiratory problems and need constant care until they reach at least three months old.

The Sphynx cat makes an excellent addition to any home that appreciates things out of the ordinary and which has the time and dedication for them. They are an excellent breed, loving and loyal with their family, and though they can bit a bit of hard work they repay it a hundred times over.

Cats are probably the most popular of pets nowadays. Originally valued for their inbred ability to hunt various house pests such as mice and roaches, cats also offer a warm and affectionate companionship to their owners. In 1987, cats overtook dogs as the number one pet in America (about 50 million cats resided in 24 million homes in 1986) and bout 37% of American homes today have at least one cat. Domestication of cats were first believed to have originated in ancient Egypt in about 3000 BC, where cats where also revered as sacred animals. Different breeds of domesticated cats come in various sizes. Some pet owners prefer small kitten-sized ones, while some prefer large-size domesticated cat breeds.

When choosing pet cats, one must consider the breeds’ characteristics in addition to its size. Here are just some of the large domesticated cat breeds that are popular with cat-lovers.

The Maine Coon

The Maine Coon is a native of the state of Maine in the USA where it is also the official state cat.

It is one of the largest breeds of domesticated cats where the males can weigh anywhere between 13 and 18 pounds (5.9 and 8.2 kg) on average, and females between 8 and 12 pounds (3.6 and 5.4 kg). In 2006, the Guinness World Records named a male purebred Maine Coon the “Longest Cat”. It measured 48 inches (120 cm) in length, from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail, and weighs 35 pounds (16 kg).

The Ragamuffin

The Ragamuffin is a long-haired domestic cat. Ragamuffins are fairly large cats – females weigh between 10 to 15 pounds (4.54 to 6.80 kg), and males weigh between 15 to 20 pounds (6.80 to 9.07 kg).

Ragamuffins are notable for their sweet, friendly personalities and plush, rabbit-like fur. They are adoptable as early as four months of age, but do not reach full maturity until around four years of age. The Ragamuffin is an expensive breed and costs can range from 0 – 00 per kitten.

The Ocicat

The Ocicat is an all-domestic breed of cat which resembles a ‘wild’ cat but has no wild blood. It is named for its resemblance to the ocelot, which is a wild cat. Ocicats are a very outgoing breed. They are often considered to have the spirit of a dog in a cat’s body. Most can easily be trained to fetch, walk on a leash and harness, come when called, speak, sit, and lie down on command. On average ocicats weigh about 12.1 pounds or 5.5 kilograms.

The Turkish Van

The Turkish Van is a large, semi-longhaired cat with a swimmer’s body. The cat is moderately long and its back legs are slightly longer than its front legs. The coat is the most fascinating trait on this cat. The semi-long haired, water resistant single coat, is thick in winter but very soft, like rabbit fur or cashmere. During the spring and summer months when it becomes extremely hot, the long hair on the body is shed for a shorter coat that retains the cashmere feel. Male Vans grow to about 16 pounds (7.3 kg) while females tend to be a bit lighter in weight, 12 to 14 pounds (5.4 to 6.4 kg). Vans, because of their fine fur, are hypo-allergenic cats. They are considered excellent pets for those with allergies.

Pixie-Bobs

Pixie-Bobs are a fully domestic breed of cat bred to resemble the North American Bobcat. Pixie-Bobs are a large breed, with males reaching 18 pounds (8 kg) and females reaching 14 pounds (6 kg). The Pixie-Bob’s body is stocky and solid. Pixie-Bobs are also the only polydactyl breed recognized by The International Cat Association (TICA). These cats may have anywhere from six to seven toes on each foot.

World’s Most Unique Breed of Cats

Its eyes may be blue, green or amber, or even one blue and one amber. The W gene responsible for the white coat and

blue eye is closely related to the hearing ability, and presence of a blue eye can indicate the cat is deaf to the side the blue

eye is located.

7. Selkirk Rex

This cute feline named Selkirk Rex is a cat breed with highly curled hair, including the whisker. It is distinct from all

other Rex breeds. This breed of cat is either longhair or shorthair variety. It differs from the LaPerm in that its coat is

more plush and thick and although both have dominant Rex Genes, they behave in different ways.

8. Savannah

The Savannah is an exotic looking breed of cat. It is a unique-looking hybrid domestic cat breed produced by a cross

between the serval and a domestic cat. This breed was first produced in 1986.

9. American Curl

This cat with distinctively unusual ears that originated in California is named the American Curl. Its ears curl back

from the face toward the center of the back of the skull. An American Curl’s ears should be handled carefully because

if handled roughly, it could damage the cartilage in the ear.

10. Don Sphynx

Another hairless cat breed that originated in Russia is the Don Sphynx. This breed of cat is also known as Don Hairless

and it started in 1987 with the discovery of a hairless cat in the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don hence the name. The

standard of points describes the cat as being medium sized and muscular, with large ears, almond shaped eyes and

distinctive long, webbed toes.

11. Maine Coon

This breed of domestic cat is the official State cat of Maine, USA. It is well known for its distinctive physical appearance

and one of the oldest natural breeds in North America. Maine Coon is the 2nd most popular breed of cat in the world

(the number one breed is Persian).

It is notable for its large bone structure, its rectangular body shape, and a long, flowing coat. The breed can be seen in

a variety of colors and are known for their intelligence and gentle personalities.

12. LaPerm

Another unique cat breed with curly hair is the LaPerm. This breed has a very affectionate personality and is genetically

unique and not related to any other Rex Cat varieties. It has a dominant gene causing their curly coats. They have an

elegant and athletic build, active and outgoing in character. This cat is reputed to be hypoallergenic cats, provoking a

significantly lower level of allergic responses than normal cats. Their most significant feature is their coat which is made

up of soft waves, curls and ringlets, resembling a shaggy perm.

Calico Cat Breeds

A calico cat is a breed of cat which is tricolored in appearance with red or

orange, black and white stripes all over its body. Varying stripes also can

be found in a different set of tricolors like blue or gray, cream and white.

There are is a huge variety of Calico cats like the tortoiseshells which come

without the white spotting. Most of them however have whit spotting in their

body.

According to the CFA or the cat fanciers association there are 16 varieties

of calico cats and different color variations. Within the Calico cat breed

there are several sub breeds like the Maine Coon Calico Cat, a Persian Calico

cat, a Scottish Fold Calico Cat and some short coats and long coat varieties

among these breeds too.

Calico cats are house cats or pet cats commonly found in many homes. It is

also a common belief that most of the Calico cats are females and not all.

Many people think the calico cat is a female cat and this information is

wrong. The majority of the calico cats are females. Cat experts have studied

the cause for this and found that the reason is a genetic one.

The calico cat needs 2 x chromosomes to be a male and this happens quite

rarely. Veterinarians have found that only one in 3000 calico cats actually

turns out to be a male. Also many people think that a Calico cat is a breed

of cat and it is not a breed but calico is referred to the condition of the

coloring on the cat’s body. Also most of the calico cats are females and the

unusual male calico cats are sterile.

If it was a breed then wouldn’t it be strange that when the male calico cats

are sterile and female calico cats still give birth to kittens and they are

still referred to as calico cats and not a cross breed. This is because the

calico is not a breed first of all. The Stripes happen because of the genes

and some deficiencies in the cat. A calico condition can happen to any cat.

So don’t be surprised when someone walks into your house and says oh you have

a Calico cat and what breed is your calico cat. Because this person

definitely knows what he or she is talking about.

The condition that has to be met to be a calico cat is the cat should have

three distinctive stripes so f colors on its body and also should have

distinct patches. Calico cats are present in many breeds and some breeds have

their own specifications to certify the cat as a calico cat and all this

depends on the grading of the color.
